Soundscape: The sounds of nature and farm animals, a male voice speaks
VILLAGE ELDER: Morning everyone! Welcome to our volunteer work drive. As the village elder, I’ve taken it upon myself to allocate tasks and make sure that food and drinks are available throughout the day. The Lahtinen family is still milking the cows, but let’s get started so we can finish everything before it’s time to bring the ducks and horses inside.
So, Hassan and friends, your job is to fix up the cartway and straighten the traffic signs. Please pick up the manure from the cartway and put it under the berry bushes.
Anssi, you’ll be cleaning the village hall, including the radio studio and cinema. Get a couple of friends to help you. Elma, your job is to clean up the school building. Get some helpers to give you a hand. You should also do some repairs on the insulating material in the northern wall. Come see me before you get started on that. We’ll take a look at it together.
The village clinic is already being cleaned, so I can cross that off my list.
Tiina, as usual, you’re on butchering duty. Our grain crops this year will be 18 per cent lower than normal, so we should probably stock up on some lamb. We’ll can the meat.
Jönssi, your job is to harvest potatoes with the kids. Tytti, please take stock at the village shop. Armas, you’re to clean the brewery. This time, please don’t drink from the tank.
That leaves waste and waste water management. I don’t have anyone assigned to that yet. Any volunteers?
(silence)
I wish it didn’t have to be like this every time. I want to remind you all about why we started this and why we chose to live in a community where we support each other. We didn’t want to be part of a system that walks all over us. We were fed up with a system where the only way to get access to care, treatment and education is money, and money drives people apart. We didn’t want to succumb to a corrupted administration and law enforcement.
Sorry, could you repeat that? Yes, we could assign this job to the Lahtinen family. They can take care of waste management this time. After all, there’s so many of them. All right, let’s get started!
