City of Yokohama

Published

Since the opening of its port in 1859, Yokohama has developed as Japan’s preeminent international port city. Yokohama is Japan’s largest municipality with a population of 3.74 million people and 120,000 established businesses.

Through our waste sorting and recycling efforts, we have gained the support of both citizens and businesses and achieved a reduction in waste volumes of more than 43% over the past decade, and are continuing to pursue 3R activities, especially in the field of food waste reduction.

We are developing innovative policies to realise a sustainable city where additional growth is generated by recycling nonrenewable resources.
