The Next Era: Democracy and participation

Discussion has revolved around the degradation, or even crisis, of democracy that has occurred in Western countries for a couple of decades now. Election turnout percentages and party memberships have steadily decreased. However, awareness of the crisis in discussions has not led to activities to reinforce democracy.

What are the current forces that are changing the fields of democracy and participation? Will we see stronger democracies in the future or are we heading towards a time when democracies fight for their existence in the face of authoritarian administration? How could democracy be strengthened and brought closer to everyday life?

The second part of the Next Era project examines the forces that are changing democracy and participation, and proposes solutions for reinforcing democracy. The articles provide viewpoints on the current turning point and its social effects.
