UPM Biofuels produces renewable and sustainable products for the transport and petrochemical sectors, offering customers ways to replace fossil raw materials and reduce their carbon footprint.
UPM utilises tall oil, a residue of pulp production, to produce renewable naphtha which can be used to make renewable plastic coating for beverage cartons.
UPM joined forces with Dow and Elopak to create a fully wood-based carton. Elopak’s customer Arla wanted to offer Finnish consumers more responsible packaging and was the first to use renewable wood-based plastics in gable-top paperboard cartons for dairy products. This reduces the use of fossil-based plastics by 180,000 kg a year and the packaging’s carbon footprint by 20%.
