Call for funding applications: Power to define futures and foresight in decision-making
Sitra is launching a funding call for projects that strengthen a multi-voiced, multi-perspective discussion on the future and foresight as part of decision-making, thus expanding the power to define futures.
The call is open until 9 June 2025, at 12:00.
What is it about?
The power to define futures refers to the ability to influence what is considered possible or desirable. Our perceptions of the future shape the decisions we make today, which is why it matters how we view and discuss the future in various decision-making contexts and who gets to participate in the decision-making. By expanding the power to define futures, we will create better conditions for shaping futures that will serve as many people as possible.
Decision-making is inherently future-oriented – decisions made today will shape both the near and long-term future. But what kind of future are we actually building through our decisions? Is this future actively discussed as part of decision-making processes? Who is included in these discussions, and whose perspectives ultimately influence the outcomes? A multi-perspective dialogue on desirable futures strengthens democracy by enabling more people to connect with society’s future visions and influence decision-making. This is why expanding the power to define futures is particularly crucial for democracy and participation.
Expanding the power to define futures in decision-making means rethinking and reforming decision-making processes and structures that significantly impact the future and people’s lives. This could involve developing operations, strategic decision-making and policies, legislation and more. Some key questions to consider include: how can we facilitate a multi-voiced discussion on the future and integrate it into decision-making? How can we involve not only today’s stakeholders but also those who will play a significant role in the future? How can we empower different groups to actively participate in decision-making?
Sitra is seeking projects that promote the expansion of the power to define futures in decision-making. Through the funding initiative, Sitra aims to foster a more inclusive and socially significant future dialogue in Finland. This is done by supporting projects that integrate the power to define futures into decision-making processes and discussions.
