FUTURE PROVINCE
Future Province was a joint project launched by Sitra and the regional mayors. Regional councils are joint regional development authorities where decision-making power is vested in the regional assembly and regional board, and regional mayors bear the executive responsibility for its operations. The Association of Finnish Local and Regional Authorities manages and coordinates the project on behalf of the regional councils.
The purpose of the project was to outline thoughts on what Finnish provinces should be like 5 to 10 years into the future. The goal was to introduce new perspectives on regional administration and the role of regions or provinces in regional development into public debate.
The project was implemented as a three-stage workshop process facilitated by Dazzle Oy. The workshops were held in February, March and April. The results were collected in the publication “Looking for a Missing Democracy – Province 2020” and published on 18 August 2011. The publication can be downloaded from Sitra’s website (the publication is in Finnish, with a summary in English).
