Pilot projects: Competitiveness through data
In the Competitiveness through Data project, we are creating links between actors and improving opportunities for sharing and using data and providing tools to do so.
What is it about?
In spring 2022, we launched a collaboration with innovation ecosystems that have recognised the importance of data sharing and are ready for it. We will pilot the co-development of data-driven services with them. The aim of the piloted solutions is to create a network-like model for sharing and using data for innovation ecosystems.
Projects in progress
Improving the recycling of vehicles through data
This project commissioned a preliminary study into how the Finnish car recycling ecosystem should be developed and how we could create a model that improves the use and sharing of data. The aim is to increase the recycling rate of cars and promote the broader reform of the automotive industry’s operating model in response to the needs and challenges of the 2020s.
The Sitra-commissioned study on the future of car recycling (PDF, in Finnish) was completed in September 2022. More information on the subject is provided in this article. The next step will be to build a digital platform in collaboration with Finnish Car Recycling Ltd and other industry participants.
The project is carried out in co-operation with the CaaS (Corridor as a Service) ecosystem.

Using data to manage the production chain in forestry
A study carried out by Sitra and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland assessed the challenges associated with the use and sharing of data when an entire production chain is optimised to align it with the principles of sustainable development.
The study focused on the forest industry. The sharing of data was examined from three perspectives: monitoring, traceability and full production chain optimisation.
The study identified barriers to sustainability and the development needs associated with the use and sharing of data by production chain participants. The findings are discussed in a joint article by Sitra and the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland (only available in Finnish).
The preliminary study was completed in December 2022.
The project is carried out in co-operation with the SEEDForest innovation ecosystem.

Extending the life cycle of the batteries of work machines
We joined forces with the VTT Technical Research Centre of Finland and Sustainable Industry X (SIX) in this project to pilot the use of data on the batteries used by mobile work machines throughout the battery life cycle, all the way from manufacture to recycling or potential subsequent use.
The aim of the trial is to maximise the use of the batteries used by mobile work machines, such as those in mining and forestry machines. Digital twin technologies and the sharing of data enable companies to make better use of batteries and facilitate the development of future battery solutions and the secondary use of batteries. The experiment took advantage of the Virtual Finland data space and developed new data-driven business models.
The final report on the experiment will be published in spring 2023.
The project is carried out in collaboration with the SIX innovation ecosystem.
