It is said that the era of digitised information technology is changing into the era of genetic code. In this new era of Life Sciences industries and modern biotechnology, industrial research and development is characterised by a genomics-based discovery process. Genomics – in connection with bioinformatics for the computerisation of genomics data – allows for the identification and sequencing of complete sets of genes within an organism and for the investigation of the structure of proteins. The research of genes and genetic code represents a systematic and interdisciplinary approach towards industrial development, involving a variety of academic research disciplines such as biology, microbiology, informatics, medical sciences, chemistry, and biochemistry. In pharmaceutical industry, the genome-based drug discovery and development is expected to make R&D more efficient in every respect. In the 1990s, Finland has managed to make the information and telecommunications industries the third pillar for exports
