Safe space principles

The safe space principles apply to all activities and events organised by Sitra. We want to make our events safe for all participants and ensure that they are free of discrimination. The safe space principles apply to Sitra’s employees and partners as well as all participants.

Listen, discuss and learn

Show respect to others by sticking to the rules of dialogue. Each person you meet and every situation you encounter is an opportunity to learn and develop. Be open to feedback and ready to change your behaviour when necessary. Do not dismiss the experiences of others. Making mistakes and asking questions is human and acceptable.

Show respect and don’t assume

Give everybody a chance to express their views. Make sure that others are also involved and can make their own views heard.

Speak respectfully to others and avoid stereotypical expressions. Don’t disparage, belittle or embarrass others. Don’t criticise the appearance of others, gossip, tell discriminatory jokes or use sexist or sexually explicit language. That being said, be understanding of other people’s mistakes. Apologise if you hurt somebody’s feelings, whether intentionally or unintentionally.

Pay attention to how you express yourself and be conscious of human diversity. Respect everybody’s right to self-determination. Do not make assumptions about people’s gender, sexual orientation, nationality, ethnic origin, religion, values, socio-economic background, functional capacity or health.

Let’s spend time together

Getting together and being social are an important part of the events organised by Sitra. Any possible use of alcohol is kept at moderate levels. If you feel that these principles are violated in our activities or events or you encounter behaviour that is otherwise disturbing, take action or contact the Sitra personnel responsible for the event.
